E: The Coast Affair is a fairly new band from the suburbs of Chicago. What stage of your career as a band would you say you're in?
Steve: Who wants to take that one?
Andrew: I got it.
Tom: I love Andy...
Steve: He's a dream.
Andrew: I think we are still at the beginning, but by beginning I mean we are just getting to the point where we know our sound. We found our sound; now we are solid. It took us five months to find our sound, but now that we have it, our new songs are coming along great, and sounding how we want them to.
Tom: I'd totally agree with Andrew--still at the beginning, but to the point we know are sound. The songs are nice and catchy now, so that's great
Steve: Nicely done, boys.
E: What parts of the band's progress show the most potential?
Steve: Can I do this one?
Andrew: Yeah.
Steve: I think, in contrast to the progress, that maybe some regression shows the potential. Like, with "Drink Up...", we knew the point we wanted to get across, and we took everything and toned it down. It's not all over the place, technically... I mean, it's a pretty simple song. We knew if we complicated it too much that it'd lose the whole point. I think that we can recognize that and come through with it--I think that shows that we've got the potential to do anything we want to, as far as writing goes. And that gives us infinite possiblities.
Tom: My reason of singing the low, shaky, whispering kind of tone is like Steve said... toning it down from our usual kind of sound.
Andrew: I also think that as a band, we all have our own talents. Steve has been playing on drums for eight years and doesn't get carried away, nor let the listeners get bored with his drumming. Tom's singing makes everything have a more unique sound, and the lyrics he writes polish it off. We all have our own talents, but as a band, we have progressed the most in song structure. All of our new songs are put together a lot more professionally.
E: How quickly do you try to get a song recorded once it's been written?
Andrew: It depends on what we have planned for the future. We recorded "Drink Up..." a few weeks after it was written because we wanted to get a new demo out to everyone so they didn't lose their interest.
Tom: I'd definitely agree.
Steve: I think that depends on the content, too. I mean, it was about someone's death, so the longer we waited... it would've been sort of...you know. It just needed to get it out there when it did.
Andrew: "Drink Up..." is about our friend Bhavin, who died this August.
Tom: We just to show respect, and show everyone in the crowd that we cared for him.
Andrew: We are planning to write an EP around the end of Spring with five to six songs; songs that we are writing now. We decided to give a long wait on this because we decided that with this EP, we are taking it a lot more seriously. We are going to spend months on these new songs to make sure they are polished correctly, and that we have everything we wanted them to have.
E: Has the band been traveling?
Andrew: Nope, not at all... with school and all we don't plan to tour until summer, if that. It depends on how good the EP turns out.
Tom: We're mostly plotting out our sound around the local areas to carry support for wherever we go.
E: What have you decided are your priorities as a band starting out?
Steve: Spreading the sound around, definitely.
Tom: Word.
Steve: Getting as many people to hear us as is possible.
Andrew: Fo' real.
E: Do you have a strong supportive hometown fanbase?
Tom: Definitely... without those boo's we wouldn't have as much pride in our music. What I mean is, them actually buying demos wearing pins and singing our lyrics.
Steve: Absolutely. We have the best friends and fans in the world. We played a hometown show four days ago, and it was packed. Everyone was screaming along and going crazy. It just feels so good to get that kind of response from everyone.
Tom: Sure does.
E: Do you think this band will take you a long ways?
Tom: It's our dream... and the rate it's going, it better.
Andrew: Yes. Definitely. We all have experience from other bands of what the "Do"s and "Don't"s are in a band. We our all still really young, and if we stick together it should definitely take us somewhere good.
Steve: As long as we work as hard as we can, I think the five of us could make this huge. We just have to work our asses off.
E: Well thanks a ton--anything left to say?
Andrew: Thanks for the interview.
Tom: Yeah, thanks for interviewing us. Means a heck.
