       Interview with Stephen and Jared

April 21st, 2004
E: Lobster Records' newest sign is Lorene Drive. How did the band and the label end up coming together?
Stephen: We have been sending them demos ever since we started recording.
Jared: And we played for Steve (Lubarsky, head of Lobster Records) last year, and have been friends for a while.
Stephen: Over time we developed a great relationship with them.
Jared: Basically, everyone at Lobster are great people. A real family feel to it.
E: In what ways has the group been working to become stronger as a band?
Stephen: Well, we have obviously been touring, and that is one of the best ways to grow as a band in more ways than one! Also, endless hours of practice... we don't just stop doing the Lorene drive thing thing--we are always busy and working hard.
Jared: Every day we're not on tour, we're doing something for the band... making our own merch, fixing the van, recording new music...
E: What sort of things do you learn through being involved in a band?
Jared: Teamwork! Communication...
Stephen: Dedication, sacrifice, self-discipline.
E: How do you think that being in a band has shaped you as a person?
Jared: Damn... good question.
Stephen: It has definitely made me a better person, I think... because growing up as an only child, I never had a brotherly bond like this before. Also, it has made me realize that if I want something, I really just have to go out there and get it.
Jared: For the first time in my life I'm following my dreams, and it's way better than any money. I guess it made me more outgoing. It's humbled us in many ways... I realized [that] all you need is food and a shower and your friends to be happy.
E: How well do you get to know the other bands you share a stage with?
Stephen: Really well. We are very friendly and outgoing... always looking forward to meeting new bands, and we always stay in touch with the people we meet. Some of the coolest people I've met in my life have been in bands that we play with.
Jared: And especially on this tour. We've met cool bands and really cool people that are really down with the music.
Stephen: One of the coolest bands we ever met was the Clarity Process, on Rise Records.
E: What would you say is the most pressing issue regarding music today?
Jared: Everyone's trying to be cool and do what's cool. I enjoy bands that are just doing it for themselves... for the love. It seems the love is gone.
Stephen: I think kids need to play music 'cause that's what they love to do... not to try to be the next coolest thing. I see no heart in a lot of music that is up and coming. Back in the 80's, you had to be a really good guitar player to hold your own--it actually took talent. Now it seems like it's all about the "drop C" thing with no hands on the fretboard... anyone can do that. I love melody and harmony, myself.
Jared: Yup.
E: How much do you expect the band to be able to support you all financially?
Jared: It already does, kind of... we don't have jobs, but we have food. Lorene drive is this thing that's bigger than us, and we just pile back in whatever we get out. The tour pays for gas, so far, and merch keeps our heads above water.
Stephen: I don't expect the band to support me financially. I have always figured it out on my own, and I see no reason to stop doing so. If anything, maybe the band can buy me a set of guitar strings here and there... but I hope to get some sort of endorsement.
Jared: We're simple guys.
E: How long did it take to come up with the name "Lorene drive"?
Stephen: It is the street that our rhythm guitarist resides on when we're not touring... a sort of headquarters for the whole outfit.
Jared: That's where we all hang out. You can go there anytime of the day when we aren't touring, and someone's there!
Stephen: It took 5 minutes to come up with the name. We used to be called 5.9.
E: What do you think is more important to the success of the band--practicing and performing the music itself, or the promoting/booking/production of the music?
Stephen: Personally, I believe that they are equally important.
Jared: 50/50. Half music and half touring.
E: What sets Lorene drive apart?
Jared: The rawness. The love. The passion.
Stephen: For one, the live show... and the fact that we actually feel the music that we play. We also are really nice guys... we like to talk to fans, and we try to not be cocky like a lot of bands we have met.
Jared: Love and passion. I tear up during our new song, "A Kiss Won't Make This Better."
E: Should fans expect any sort of style change now that the band's on Lobster Records?
Jared: No, not at all!
Stephen: Hell no.
Jared: We're the same guys.
Stephen: We are going to keep doing what we are doing... we do this because this is the music that we love to play. I wouldn't change for anyone.
E: What is the most gratifying part of being in a band?
Stephen: Influencing other bands, and getting to make new friends every day! Also, touching the hearts of many kiddies...
Jared: When you come to a town and you don't know anybody, and when you leave... you know everybody. Seeing kids smiling as they buy a CD or ask for an autograph... priceless!
Stephen: Creating music. Changing people's lives.
Jared: Making a dent in the world around us.
E: Well, you guys are definitely getting the success you deserve. Anything left to say?
Jared: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us!
Stephen: I just would like to say for anyone reading this that none of it would be possible without you... fans are number one to us, and we love each and every one. Always stay true to yourself and your music!
