Interview with Danny, Fox, Blake, and Kyle S.

August 24th, 2003
E: By now, A Storybook Ending has developed a stable fanbase in the SoCal area. What sort of things do you do to maintain a relationship with your fans?
Fox: Well... at our shows, we hang around and talk with kids before and after our sets. I guess we just want to make sure that they feel that they are greatly appreciated and that their support really means a lot to us.
Blake: Yes, and we have a good online community going through our website as well.
Danny: The way Storybook maintains a good fanbase is by giving their fans what they come for every time, which is "rock", and they e-mail and Instant Message with their fans, as well as make time after shows to talk with them. And give hugs and some lovin'.
Kyle: We try to be nice and do pretty much whatever they want. We like to include people at shows as well... like claps and fists in the air, and sing-alongs, too.
E: What kind of atmosphere do you try to create at your shows?
Danny: Blake, you answer the atmosphere question; you're a spacey guy.
Blake: At the shows we try to give off an exciting, energetic, ass-kicking, and appreciative atmosphere... we are always excited to play for everyone and we appreciate everyone's support. They go there to get rocked.
Fox: We just try to bring the rock, like Danny said... we try to put on shows where kids can come and enjoy some rock and roll and dance their asses off.
Kyle: We make it feel like home. You know--comfortable.
Danny: With me being in the band now--and I'm totally honored, because I love the guys in Storybook--I want our shows to be filled with kids who are coming for the right reasons. I've never cared for the "scene elite," or kids who just come to get chicks and vice versa. I'm all about rock n' roll, and the SBE fans are, too. That's why the band does well. We keep it real like blue steel.
E: Danny, is fitting into an already well-established group like Storybook difficult?
Danny: Well, to be honest, at first I was worried about what it would be like, acceptance from their loyal fanbase and all. But now I'm seeing that I'm being taken in with open arms, and they have accepted me into the family. So I'm really excited to be a part of it, and I just hope that everyone else will be excited with what I'm bringing to the table.
Fox: Yes... we took him shopping the other day for some tight pants, to get the 90's out of him.
E: Musically, does Danny come from a different background that will maybe give Storybook a different feel in future recordings?
Fox: Yeah, he does. I think that Danny comes from more of a "rock and roll" type of background, whereas [former vocalist] Paul was more "indie," more mellow. We in the band can already feel the shift to a more raw, rock and roll type of sound, which we are really looking forward to.
Blake: New Storybook material is a lot more rock, and Danny adds a lot to that.
E: And Danny, you're certainly no stranger to the band scene, are you?
Danny: Nope--I also sing with a great group of guys called National Product. I grew up with them and made the move out here to California after a summer tour where we did some dates with Midtown, the Ataris, and Tsunami Bomb. They are very important to me, as is SBE.
Kyle: Danny is amazing. He came in so prepared. He rules--we couldn't be happier. Can't wait for people to hear him.
E: When do you plan on recording again? I'm sure the extensive Storybook fanbase would love to hear some songs with Danny on vocals.
Danny: We'll be going into the studio very soon. We will be laying down some new songs, and some old ones.
E: On your last album there were a few new tracks, but you re-recorded several songs that appeared on the preceeding ...to have loved and lost EP. What made you decide to redo these songs and put them on the new EP?
Blake: That recording really wasn't good, and we thought that re-recording some of the older stuff would be cool...
Fox: We just felt that our first recording was very rushed; we actually laid down every track for every song in one day. So it was like, "Let's do these again, and make sure we do them right this time", because we kind of felt like we'd half-assed them, you know?
E: What's it like recording with multiple guitarists?
Kyle: Writing is great because we all listen to similar yet different things. Dabu and Blake really know how to work off of each other, since they have been playing together for so long.
E: Have you written any new material since the most recent EP?
Kyle: Yes--we have one new song. But Dabu and Blake are working and writing.
Blake: Yup.
E: When you write your songs, do you usually go in any instrumental order?
Fox: Guitars and drums first.
Kyle: I go off drums, mostly.
Fox: And vocals tops it all off... then we work on it as a whole, tweaking different parts and what not.
Blake: We change stuff constantly after we have everything and see how it sounds.
Kyle: Yeah, once we have a basic structure, we work on it together. But we never sit down and say "Okay, let's write a song."
Fox: Yeah... we tried that once and it was horrible.
E: In addition to singing, Paul added another guitar and some piano to the mix. Will Danny be able to cover this?
Danny: I do play guitar, but for right now I'm just gonna rock some singing with the boys. There may be a time when I hop on and rock one with them--I've always wanted to play a song and sing. That would be awesome.
Blake: Dabu, Stanley and I all play piano.
Kyle: Yeah, it's a good thing that Blake got a keyboard and taught me.
E: So will we still be seeing piano-ed tracks like "The Dark Heir" on future records?
Danny: Yes, and you'll be seeing it live as well.
E: Are you thinking of releasing a full-length LP anytime soon, or will you just continue with a string of EP's?
Kyle: Full LP, eventually.
E: So what plans are being made for the band's future? Any extensive touring coming up?
Kyle: Hopefully playing many many shows... getting a bigger fanbase, and getting signed, which leads to more touring. Spreading the Storybook love, as we like to call it.
Fox: Yeah... now that Danny's in the band and lives here in "the OC" (Orange County), we really hope to get a lot more done within a shorter period of time. Hopefully that will get us somewhere in the long run.
Danny: Tour, tour, tour... make good music... continue playing for the love of rock, and just having fun. Everything else is icing on the cake.
E: You've played a lot of shows, many of which were played at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim. What are some of your most memorable shows? You've shared the stage with some awesome bands.
Kyle: The Jealous Sound show was great... so many people going off.
Fox: The March 2nd show was really really fun... I think it was with HelloGoodbye and Halfway Home.
Kyle: Yeah, that one, too. Lots of our friends and lots of new friends.
Fox: We'll be adding September 7th to that list.
Kyle: Yeah, no worries about that.
E: Well, you guys are definitely going to go far. Anything else you want to say--give credit to anyone unmentioned so far?
Danny: I want to thank the SBE family for bringing me in with open arms, and the fans of SBE who are loyal and will support this band to no end. Can't wait to rock you kids.
Kyle: Hell yeah. Everyone needs to spread the Storybook love. We want to thank you for interviewing us and for being interested in the music we love to make.
Fox: I'd like to thank Paul Borovay, our old singer... he's a really cool guy, and we wish him the best.
Kyle: Yeah, definitely. We love you, Paul.
Blake: We have to give credit to Paul. He is an awesome guy, a great friend, and a really talented musician.
Danny: Paul is an amazing person, and I hope I can only do half of what he's brought to Storybook.
Fox: Oh, and Fatguy from Atreyu.
Kyle: Yeah, he spreads the Storybook love, fo'sho.
Blake: Thanks to all the fans and people who have been supporting us out there. Without them, none of this is possible. And thanks to you for being so cool!
